I have been a member of the North Carolina State Bar from 1980 to the present.

I am also have been certified as a Specialist in North Carolina Criminal Law by the North Carolina State Bar. I received this certification in 2004 and have maintained it since that time.
This is a result of recommendations from other lawyers and judges, passing a written exam and a review by the Specialization Committee of the State Bar of my qualifications.
North Carolina Advocates for Justice (A.F.J.) This organization was formerly known as the North Carolina Academy for Trial Lawyers. This is the organization that has my strongest allegiance. The best way to describe the A.F.J. is that it is an organization for lawyers representing everyday people. Changes in the law or the Court system that have increased the fairness of our criminal courts have often begun with the A.F.J. I am a past secretary, Vice-Chair and Chair of the Criminal Defense Section.
As the name indicates, this organization is made up of lawyers doing criminal defense across the country.

The Bar Association is a voluntary organization of some, but not all, North Carolina lawyers.
The organization is made up of lawyers doing a wide variety of legal work.
I am a member of the bar of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
This is an organization that provides information for lawyers defending people in marijuana cases and advocates for decriminalization.
While I do not consume marijuana, I just can’t see those who do as criminals.
